The 3-part exam
What happens at every cleaning visit
You shouldn’t have to guess what’s happening in your own mouth. Every exam at our North Houston office runs the same way, in the same order. We tell you what we’re doing as we do it.
Pocket-depth check
A small probe reads the gap between each tooth and gum in millimeters. Healthy reads 1 to 3, and we tell you your number.
Digital cavity scan
Digital images and scans catch early decay and bone changes before they hurt or show up on a regular look.
Gentle ultrasonic clean
A vibrating tip and a stream of water loosen plaque and tartar with light contact, then we polish.

Healthy gums read 1 to 3mm. At 4mm we watch. At 5mm or deeper, we talk about a deep cleaning.

Standard vs deep
The honest difference between a standard and deep cleaning
You should never be sold a deep cleaning you don’t need. A deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, treats early gum disease. It is not a premium version of a routine visit. We only recommend it when your measurements and symptoms show it’s needed.
Standard cleaning
For healthy gums that read 1 to 3mm with no bleeding or swelling. Removes plaque and tartar above the gumline, then polishes. Includes a pocket check, a cavity scan, an ultrasonic clean, and a polish.
Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing)
For pockets that read 5mm or deeper, plus bleeding or swelling. Removes buildup below the gumline and smooths the roots so your gums can reattach. Includes scaling below the gumline, root planing, numbing for comfort, and a follow-up check.

Most people find the ultrasonic cleaning comfortable. If your gums are sensitive or you have deep pockets, we can numb the area first. Tell us how you’re feeling and we’ll adjust as we go.
For healthy gums, twice a year is the standard. If you’re managing gum disease, we may suggest more frequent visits. We base the schedule on your measurements, not a blanket rule.
You’ll usually notice bleeding when you brush or a bad taste that won’t go away. The real way to know is the pocket measurement. If your pockets read 5mm or deeper, we’ll explain why a deep cleaning helps.
Most PPO plans cover preventive cleanings at 100%. Deep cleanings are usually covered at a percentage. We run a complimentary benefits check before you book so you know your share up front.
That’s okay, and it’s more common than you’d think. We start where you are, and the exam tells us what’s going on. We build a plan from there.
