Straight talk
We try to save the tooth before we pull it.
A filling, a crown or a root canal can often keep a damaged tooth in place. We recommend an extraction only when a tooth is too broken, too infected or too crowded to keep, and we show you why on your X-ray first.
Save it if we can
Fillings, crowns and root canals come first when the tooth can be kept.
Remove it if we must
A tooth that can’t be kept comes out gently, with you fully numb.
Either way, you see the X-ray and hear the reason before you decide.

The visit
What happens during an extraction
You shouldn’t have to brace yourself. We use modern local anesthesia, test the area, and don’t start until you tell us you can’t feel a thing.

Numb, then test
We numb the area and gently check it’s working before any instrument comes near you.

Loosen gently
We loosen the tooth slowly. You may feel pressure, but you shouldn’t feel pain.

Gauze and rest
We place gauze to help a clot form and go over aftercare before you leave.

Plan the gap
When you’re ready, we talk through a bridge, a denture or an implant to replace the tooth.

We numb the area fully and test it before we start. You may feel pressure while the tooth is loosened, but you shouldn’t feel pain. If you do, raise a hand and we stop.
Most people feel better within a few days. We go over what to expect and how to care for the area before you leave, and you can call us with any question.
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket comes loose too early. Skip straws, smoking and hard spitting for the first few days, and call us if the pain gets worse instead of better.
If a tooth sits deep in the jaw or the roots are complicated, Dr. Bastani refers you directly and explains exactly why. You won’t be steered into a treatment we aren’t confident we can do well.
We accept most major PPO plans, Medicaid, CHIP, and eligible DentaQuest-administered plans. We check your benefits before your visit so you know your estimated cost.
